Islam is the second largest religion in India, and is embraced by about 14.2% of the population, or about 172 million people (according to the 2011 census) as a religious ethnicity. Islam first came to the west coast of India with the arrival of Arab merchants in the early 7th century AD to the coast of Malabar and Konkan - Gujarat state. The Shiraman Juma Mosque in Kerala is believed to be the first mosque in India, which was built in 629 AD by Malik bin Dinar. After an expedition by the ruler of Bahrain to Bahrush in the 7th century CE, communities of Arab and Persian merchant immigrants from southern Arabia and the Persian Gulf began to settle in Gujarat. Ismaili Shi'i Islam was introduced to Gujarat in the second half of the eleventh century, with the Fatimid al-Mustansir al-Mustansirullah dispatching missionaries to Gujarat in 467 AH / 1073 CE. Islam arrived in northern India in the 12th century through Turkish invasions and has since become a part of India's religious and cultural heritage.
