Shel Silverstein never fails to surprise me with his out of this world creativity. Literally, no other person in this world could have created a book like this. He described some bizarre situations like a skinny elephant in the rhymes and invited the reader to draw them in blank space! Over 80% space of this book is left blank for readers to draw the pictures. A reader, who has time and skill and patience can draw them to have immense fun. I can imagine how some children are having fun with this book. And readers like me, who do not have enough time, skill and patience for this task, are they going to be deprived of fun? تُرجمت أعماله إلى أكثر من 30 لغة، وتم بيع أكثر من 20 مليون نسخة. حصل على جائزتي غرامي، بالإضافة إلى جائزة الغولدن غلوب وجائزة الأوسكار.

من أهم أعماله الشجرة المعطاء التي أصدرها سنة 1964.

مسيرته
ولد سيلفرشتاين في عائلة يهودية، ونشأ في حي لوغان سكوير في شيكاغو، وولج مدرسة روزفلت الثانوية، وبعد ذلك، جامعة إلينوي في إربانا-شامبين، والتي طرد منها. ثم التحق بأكاديمية شيكاغو للفنون الجميلة..
